In contrast to the reaction of fulvenes with (CH3CN)3Cr(CO)3, which leads to pure (fulvene)Cr(CO)3 complexes, the reaction of L3M(CO)3 with fulvenes gives a mixture of (fulvene)M(CO)3 (2) and substituted dimeric (cyclopentadienyl)2M2(CO)6 complexes (3) difficult to separate.The structure of bis(η5-benzhydrylcyclopentadienyl)-hexacarbonyldimolybdenum (3a) has been determined by X-ray diffraction.The (fulvene)Mo(CO)3 complex 4 reacts with tertiary phosphanes and methylenetriphenylphosphorane to give the zwitterionic addition products 5 and 6.
