Decarboxylation of 2-alkyl-5,5-dicarboxy-1,3-dioxanes gave the corresponding monocarboxylic acids.The reaction of the acid chlorides with para-substituted phenols led to esters which form nematic and smectic A phases at higher temperatures than the analogous derivatives of trans-4-alkylcyclohexanecarboxylic acids.
