The complex [PtMe2(N N)], N N = 1,10-phenanthroline, reacts with a series of organic halides to give new platimim(IV) complexes characterized as [PtXMe2R(N N)] (R = Me, Et, n-Pr, n-Bu, CH2C6H4CH2Br, (CH2)nX; n = 0, 1,3, 5; X = Br, I). Complexes [PtIMe2{(CH2)nI}(N N)] (n = 3-5) react further with [PtMe2(N N)] to produce binuclear complexes [Pt2I2Me4{μ-(CH2)n}(N N)2]. The complexes are characterized by elemental analysis and NMR and in the case of the binuclear complexes by pyrolysis.
