Reactions of Azocoupled Homophthalic Anhydride with Nucleophiles

Azocoupled homophthalic anhydride (1) gives 1,3(2H,4H)-isoquinolinedione derivatives (4) with aliphatic and aromatic primary amines.However, with sodium hydroxide, alkoxide and borohydride as well as with ammonia and secondary amines, it undergoes ring opening and subsequent recyclization reactions to give 4-substituted 2-aryl-1(2H)-phthalazinone derivatives.
