Electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry of indium(III) porphyrins. Reactions of five-coordinate ionic complexes

The electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry of In(III) tetraphenyl- and octaethylporphyrins were investigated in nonaqueous media. Cournerions on the In(III) complexes were either Cl- or ClO4-. Each oxidized and reduced species was characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, and ESR spectra were obtained for each of the generated cation and anion radicals. Singly oxidized species gave rise to ESR spectra with values of g ≈ 2.00 but with values of ΔH that varied between 16.8 and 221 G depending upon the nature of the porphyrin ring and the composition of the solvent-supporting electrolyte system. Analysis of the ESR data indicated π-ring-centered reactions with a small amount of spin density residing upon the metal.
