The diruthenium(II,III) and diosmium(III) acetates Ru2(O2CCH3)4Cl and Os2(O2CCH3)4Cl2 react with alkyl isocyanides RNC (R = CHMe2, CMe3, or C4H11) to give the homoleptic metal(II) complexes [M(CNR)6] (PF6)2 (M = Ru or Os). This is the first general synthetic route to these complexes and is an important further illustration of the use that can be made of the cleavage of multiple metal-metal bonds by π-acceptor ligands such as isocyanides. The tert-butyl isocyanide complexes readily undergo a dealkylation reaction to give the cyano derivatives [M(CNCMe3)5CN]PF6. The spectroscopic (IR and 1H and 13C NMR) and electrochemical properties of these complexes have been measured.
