The yellow pigment of the mediterranean parasitic flowering plant Cytinus hypocistis (Rafflesiaceae) was found to be an ellagitannin. The structure was proposed as "1,2,3-tri-O-galloyl-4,6-(isohexahydroxydiphenoyl)glucose (1) and named isoterchebin. Now the complete structural elucidation of this ellagitannin has been realized by 1H and 13C NMR studies.Isoterchebin is the cyclic 4,6-ester 2 of 1,2,3-tri-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose with 1',4',5',6'-tetrahydro-4,5,5',6',6'-pentahydroxy-4'-oxo-6,5'-epoxy-2,2'-dicarboxylic acid.
