When treated with chelate phosphanes chel-P3, aryl iridium(I) compounds of the type Ir(CO)6H4-nMen-CH3-(2)>(PPh3)2 readily undergo PPh3 substitution, CO insertion, and oxidative C-H addition to give metallaheterocyclic complexes of formula fac-(chel-P3)Ir-(H6H4-nMen)-CH2-(2)> (1-4) (C6H4-nMen = C6H4, C6H3Me-(6), C6H2Me2-(4,6); chel-P3 = PhP2, MeP2, PhP2, MeC(CH2-PPh2)3).The cyclic iridium(III) species have been investigated by IR, 1H, and 31P NMR spectroscopy as well as by a single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of fac-Ir-(H (1a).
