The synthesis and principal properties of 2-(4'-bromobenzylsulfinyl and sulfonyl)benzoic acids are described.Racemic sulfoxide was resolved by fractional crystallization of its brucine diastereomeric salts.The relative configurations of the enantiomers were elucidated.Optical rotatory dispersion of the laevorotatory enantiomer, its esters and methylamide in the region 360 a, ΔS(excit.), ΔH(excit.)) of racemization of dextrorotatory 2-(4'-bromobenzylsulfinyl)benzoic acid were determined by the classical kinetic methods.A stereoselective rearrangement of laevorotatory 2-(4'-bromobenzylsulfinyl)-benzoic acid to dextrorotatory 3-(4'-bromophenyl)-4-thiaisochroman-1-one is described.
