Cinnamylation of 4-Hydroxycoumarins with Cinnamyl Alcohol

Condensation of 4-hydroxy-7-methoxy-8-methylcoumarin (1) with cinnamyl alcohol in the presence of orthophosphoric acid at 50-55 deg C affords 3,4-dihydro-8-methoxy-7-methyl-2-phenyl-2H,5H-pyranobenzopyran-5-one (4) and 3-cinnamyl-4-hydroxy-7-methoxy-8-methyl-2H-1-benzopyran-2-one (5).The former product is obtained exclusively when the reaction is carried out at 75-80 deg C.Similar results are obtained with other 4-hydroxycoumarins (2 and 3).
