The unsymmetrically substituted chelating 1,1-diphosphine Ph2PCH2P(CH3)2 reacts with the cluster (μ3-CH3C)Co3(CO)9 to give the chiral cluster (μ3-CH3C)Co3(CO)7(Ph 2PCH2P(CH3)2) as a racemic mixture. A method of resolving this cluster is studied. Substitution of a carbonyl by an asymmetric monophosphine yields the cluster (μ3-CH3C)Co3(CO)6(Ph 2PCH2P(CH3)2)L*. The two expected diastereoisomers are characterized by NMR and HPLC, and no epimerization process is detected. Under CO pressure the monophosphine is selectively replaced to give back (μ3-CH3C)Co3(CO)7(Ph 2PCH2P(CH3)2) but racemization of the cluster frame occurs under these conditions. The use of this cluster as a catalyst for styrene hydroformylation is discussed.
