===============================================================================
POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS
al
EYE CONTACT:
Particulates may scratch eye surfaces/cause mechanical irritation.
*
SKIN CONTACT:

INHALATION:
*
Negligible hazard at ambient temperature (-18 to 38 Deg C; 0 to 100 Deg F)
Vapors and/or aerosols which may be formed at elevated temperatures may
be irritating to eyes and respiratory tract.

dibromochloromethylpropane (DBCMP), tribromomethylpropane (TBMP) and other low
molecular weight halogenated hydrocarbons. Trace concentrations of these
compounds on the order of parts per billion, may be emitted into the atmosphere
*
after heating at temperatures exceeding 150 Deg C. during compounding or
*
processing operations.
*
DBCMP and TBMP have structural elements in common with dibromochloropropane
(DBCP), a compound NOT found in Bromobutyl Rubber, but which is a recognized
Ex
carcinogen, reproductive toxin and genotoxin (mutagen). The toxicity of the
Bromobutyl contaminate, DBCMP was compared to DBCP in a 10 week inhalation
exposure. Results showed that, at the maximum tested dose of 50 ppm, DBCMP
xo
produced no evidence of systemic toxicity or significant histological changes.
Short-term, in vitro tests indicate that DBCMP and TBMP are less genotoxic than
nM
DBCP, though their mutagenic activities are not insignificant. Therefore,
DBCMP and TBMP may have carcinogenic potential. ExxonMobil recommends a 0.01
ppm Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) for total DBCMP plus TBMP. ExxonMobil
further recommends observance of the ACGIH TLV of 0.5 ppm for Bromoform.
ob
Experience has demonstrated that with adequate ventilation and good industrial
hygiene practice, exposures can be controlled to well within the recommended
il
OEL.

SECTION 4 FIRST AID MEASURES
he
===============================================================================
EYE CONTACT:
This product is an inert solid. If in eye, remove as one
m
would any foreign object.
SKIN CONTACT:
ic
For hot product, immediately immerse in or flush the affected area with
large amounts of cold water to dissipate heat. Cover with clean cotton
al
sheeting or gauze and get prompt medical attention. No attempt should be
made to remove material from skin or to remove contaminated clothing, as
*
the damaged flesh can be easily torn.
INHALATION:
*
In case of adverse exposure to vapors and/or aerosols formed at elevated
temperatures, immediately remove the affected victim from exposure.
*
Administer artificial respiration if breathing is stopped. Keep at rest.
Call for prompt medical attention.
INGESTION:
First aid is normally not required.

===============================================================================
*
FLASH POINT: > 482 Deg F. NOTE: See Notes Section
*
FLAMMABLE LIMITS: NOTE: Not Applicable
AUTOIGNITION TEMP.: NOTE: Not Applicable
*
GENERAL HAZAR Solid material, may burn at or above the flashpoint, and airborne dust may
Ex
explode if ignited .
If thermally decomposed, flammable/toxic gases may be released.
Toxic gases will form upon combustion.
xo
Fire is accompanied by the evolution of a dense black smoke with an
acrid odor. It may cause watery eyes (lachrimation).
nM
FIRE FIGHTING
Use water spray to cool fire exposed surfaces and to protect personnel.
Isolate "fuel" supply to fire.
Extinguish the fire by cooling with water spray.
ob
Respiratory and eye protection required for fire fighting personnel.
DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS UNDER FIRE CONDITIONS
Hydrogen Bromide (HBr) (Toxic); Under Oxygen lean conditions, Carbon
il
Monoxide (CO) and irritating smoke may be produced.

SECTION 8 EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
===============================================================================
Ex
EXPOSURE CONTROLS
Local exhaust ventilation of process equipment may be needed to control
particulate exposures to below the recommended exposure limit. See
xo
personal protection recommendations.
PERSONAL PROTECTION
nM
For open systems where contact is likely, wear safety glasses with side
shields.
Where contact may occur with hot materials, wear thermal resistant gloves,
arm protection and a face shield.
ob
Where overexposure by inhalation may occur and engineering, work practice
or other means of exposure reduction are not adequate, approved
respirators may be necessary.
il

SECTION 16 OTHER INFORMATION
===============================================================================

NOTES:
*
1. Bromobutyl will withstand 170 Deg.C for 30 minutes
before decomposition begins with the release of HBr (2
*
wt% maximum). Continued heating at 10 Deg. C/min
results in the depolymerization of the rubber to
Ex
volatile hydrocarbons in the 270 to 300 Deg.C (518 to
572 Deg.F) range.
xo
2. Incorporation of carbon black increases bromobutyl
temperature stability and reduces the quantity of HBr

release.
