theophylline is a smooth muscle relaxant used chiefly for its bronchodilator effect, treating of chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema(copd), bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and bronchospastic distress. theophylline can increase blood pressure and renal blood flow, increasing heart muscle contractility and efficiency; as a positive inotropic, increasing heart rate: positive chronotropic, some anti-inflammatory effects, central nervous system stimulatory effect mainly on the medullary respiratory center.
