Solubility in the LaCl3-LnCl3-HCl-H2O (Ln = Pr, Nd) systems at 25°C
The solubility in the quaternary water-salt systems LaCl 3-NdCl3-HCl-H2O (1) and LaCl3- PrCl3-HCl-H2O (2) at 25°C was studied in the section of 40 wt % hydrochloric acid, a system with a eutonic discontinuity. The composition at the point of discontinuity for the eutonic solution is the following. In system 1: 4.67 wt % LaCl3 · 7H2O, 0.37 wt % PrCl3 · 7H2O, 37.98 wt % HCl, and 56.98 wt % H2O; in system 2: 4.37 wt % LaCl3 · 7H 2O, 0.93 wt % NdCl3 · 6H2O, 37.88 wt % HCl, and 56.82 wt % H2O.

Synthesis, structure and properties of [Pr(DMSO)5(H 2O)2](μ-CN)[Co(CN)5]·H2O
A new cyano-bridged praseodymiumIII-cobaltIII complex [Pr(DMSO)5(H2O)2](μ-CN)[Co(CN) 5]·H2O, (1), has been synthesized via solution reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The slightly distorted square-antiprism eightfold-coordinated Pr(III) and the approximately oriented octahedrally sixfold-coordinated Co(III) are linked by a cyano-bridge group to form a dinuclear complex. The [Pr(DMSO)5(H2O) 2](μ-CN)[Co(CN)5] species are held together via hydrogen bonds to form a two-dimensional slab. The magnetic properties show that complex 1 exhibits antiferromagnetic interactions. Two novel R- and S-malato-bridged coordination polymers by reacting lanthanide chloride and maleic anhydride, 1,10-phenanthroline at hydrothermal condition
Two less common lanthanide coordination polymers, [Ln2(fum)(malate)2(phen)2]n ·n1.25H2O (Ln=Eu, 1; Pr, 2. fum=fumarate, phen=1,10-phenanthroline) were synthesized and characterized by IR spectra and X-ray crystallography. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that complex 1 is isostructural with complex 2. In the two complexes, we found a pair of enantiomers (R-malate and S-malate) which are obtained by addition reaction between maleate and water and fumarate which result from configurational tranformation of maleate. The two structures consist of coordination polymer chains along the c-axis which are held together solely through hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. Three-dimension supramolecular structures are formed through the two types of weak interaction. The IR data are also described and compared with those of other similar complexes.

Coordination polymers based on inorganic lanthanide(III) sulfate skeletons and an organic isonicotinate N-oxide connector: Segregation into three structural types by the lanthanide contraction effect
Fourteen three-dimensional coordination polymers of general formula [Ln(INO)(H2O)(SO4)]n, where Ln = La, 1·La; Ce, 2·Ce; Pr, 3·Pr; Nd, 4·Nd; Sm, 5·Sm; Eu, 6·Eu; Gd, 7·Gd; Tb, 8·Tb; Dy, 9·Dy; Ho, 10·Ho; Er, 11·Er; Tm, 12·Tm; Yb, 13·Yb; and Lu, 14·Lu; INO = isonicotinate-N-oxide, have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions of Ln3+, MnCO3, MnSO4·H 2O, and isonicotinic acid N-oxide (HINO) at 155 °C and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, thermal analysis, luminescence spectroscopy, and the magnetic measurement. The structures are formed by connection of layer, chain, or dimer of Ln-SO4 by the organic connector, INO. They belong to three structural types that are governed exclusively by the size of the ions: type I for the large ions, La, Ce, and Pr; type II for the medium ions, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Tb; and type III for the small ions, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu. Type I consists of two-dimensional undulate Ln-sulfate layers pillared by INO to form a three-dimensional network. Type II has a 2-fold interpenetration of 3D herringbone networks, in which the catenation is sustained by extensive π-π interactions and O-H...O and C-H...O hydrogen bonds. Type III comprises one-dimensional chains that are connected by INO bridges, resulting in an α-Po network. The progressive structural change is due to the metal coordination number decreasing from nine for the large ions via eight to seven for the small ions, demonstrating clearly the effect of lanthanide contraction. The sulfate ion acts as a μ4- or μ3-bridge, connecting two, three, or four metals, and is both mono- and bidentate. The INO ligand acts as a μ3- or μ2-bridge with carboxylate group in syn-syn bridging or bidentate chelating mode. The materials show considerably high thermal stability. The magnetic properties of 4·Nd, 6·Eu, 7·Gd, and 13·Yb and the luminescence properties of 6·Eu and 8·Tb are also investigated.

Hydrothermal synthesis and structural characterization of new lanthanide coordination polymers with pimelic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline
This paper presents three new lanthanide coordination polymers [Pr 2(pim)3(phen)2(H2O)] n·3nH2O (1) (H2pim=pimelic acid; phen=1,10-phenanthroline) and [Ln(Hpim)(pim)(phen)]n·1. 5nH2O (Ln=Nd, 2; Er, 3) prepared by the hydrothermal reaction. The structural details of complexes 1, 2 and 3 are reported. In complex 1, the Pr(III) ions are bridged by pim in three modes to form 2D layers. Adjacent layers are assembled by hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking between phen ligands into a 3D network. In complex 2, the Nd(III) ions are connected by pim and Hpim in two modes into 1D chains. Hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking between chains result in a 3D supramolecular structure. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that complex 3 is isostructural with complex 2.

Synthesis and structural characterization of new lanthanide coordination polymers with nitrilotriacetic acid
Reported herein are the hydrothermal synthesis and crystal structures of four lanthanide coordination polymers with nitrilotriacetic acid (H 3NTA) [Ln(NTA)(H2O)]n (Ln=La, 1; Pr, 2; Nd, 3; Eu, 4). Despite similar syntheses, compounds 1 to 4 show transformation in coordination mode of NTA and coordination number of Ln3+ duo to lanthanide contraction. The Ln(III) ions in 1 and 2 are nine-coordinated and connected through octadentate bridging ligands (NTA) to form a three-dimensional network. The Ln(III) ions in 3 and 4 are eight-coordinated and bridged by heptadentate bridging ligands (NTA) to form an extended two-dimensional layer structure, which further construct a three-dimensional supramolecular structure via coordination bond and three-centered hydrogen bonding between adjacent layers.

Comparison of the spectroscopic behaviour of single crystals of lanthanide halides (X = Cl, Br)
Halides belong to large band gap matrices that have the perspective of wide applications when doped by optical active ions. This paper presents the results of spectroscopic studies of single crystals of halides (Cl, Br) of Ce, Pr and Nd. Their spectroscopic behaviour: electron-phonon coupling, ion pair interactions and the effect of covalency, is compared. Absorption, emission and emission excitation spectra of single crystals of LnCl 3·yH2O (Ln = Nd, Pr, Ce; y=6, 7) were recorded at room temperatures and low temperatures down to 4.2K. The intensities of the electronic lines and the Judd-Ofelt parameters were calculated (Nd, Pr) and compared to those of LnBr3·yH2O presented earlier by us. The relationship between the hypersensitivity and covalency was discussed. With increasing soft character of the halides (Br- > Cl-), the covalent character of Ln-ligand bond increases and the hypersensitive bands become more intense. The Judd-Ofelt intensity analysis resulted in a set of τλ parameters evaluated with quite low standard deviations. The temperature dependences of the intensities have been found and the vibronic coupling in the f-f transitions were analysed. At the low temperature (4.2K), strong vibronic components occur in the electronic lines of the Nd(III) and Pr(III) ions, mainly with the Ln-X vibrations. The modes, which are in resonance with the splitting of the ground state multiplet, mediate in the cooperative transitions. Vibrational studies of the compounds under test were performed at the ambient temperature using IR and Raman spectroscopy. The assignment of the bands was done on the basis of the factor group analysis. The spectral features below 300cm-1 point at the differences between the spectra of the bromides and chlorides of Nd and Pr. Although the spectral features within the FIR region are complex, the bands of the praseodymium monocrystals originated by halogen bridges are clearly visible.

Hydrothermal synthesis and characterization of novel lanthanide 2,2′-diphenyldicarboxylate complexes
Lanthanide complexes with a one-dimensional chain, [Ln2(dpdc)3(H2O)2]n [Ln = La (1), Pr (2), Eu (3), Tb (4); dpdc = 2,2′-diphenyldicarboxylate] were obtained by hydrothermal reaction of lanthanide(III) chlorides and 2,2′-diphenyldicarboxylic acid, and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure data reveal that they are isostructural. In the asymmetric unit, the two Ln3+ ions are both eight-coordinate but they have different coordination environments. Lanthanide ions arranged in a zigzag manner are bridged by the dpdc ligands into a 1-D chain, while the structure appears like a pinwheel viewed along the c axis. In these complexes, 2,2′-diphenyldicarboxylate anions exhibit tetradentate and pentadentate coordination modes. A laser-induced high-resolution spectrum (resolution: 0.2 cm-1) of 3 was obtained, which shows two Eu3+ sites in 3. Three new lanthanide coordination polymers containing isophthalate and 1,10-phenanthroline
Three lanthanide coordination polymers were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Pr 2(mBDC)3(phen)(H2O)]n·0.5n H2O (1) (mBDC = isophthalate, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) exhibits two kinds of metal environments (coordination numbers 7 and 8). In complex 1, mBDC ligands adopt the tetradentate (bridging and bridging) coordination mode and connect Pr ions into an undulating layer, and a 3D supramolecular structure is formed via hydrogen bonds between adjacent layers. [Tb4(mBDC) 6(phen)]n (2) has three types of metal environments (coordination numbers 6, 7 and 8) and is composed of a 3D network formed by mBDC linking Tb ions via tetradentate (bridging and bridging) and pentadentate (bridging/chelating and bridging) coordination modes. There are two kinds of small quadrilateral channels along the a-axis. [Er4(mBDC) 6(phen)]n (3) is isostructural to complex 2.

Metal poly(benzimidazol-1-yl)borates. Synthesis and spectral characterization of some lanthanide chelates of hydridotris- and tetrakis(benzimidazol-1-yl)borate anions
Complexes of La(III), Nd(III), Pr(III), Sm(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III) and Yb(III) with hydridotris- and tetrakis(benzimidazol-1-yl) borate anions (L1 and L2) have been prepared and characterized. The spectral parameters β, b1/2, δ% and η, evaluated from the electronic spectra of the Pr, Nd, Sm, Ho and Er complexes, suggest the presence of a weak covalent contribution in the metal-ligand bond. The IR spectral data reveal that both L1 and L2 behave as tridentate ligands coordinating via the pyridyl and pyrrolic nitrogen atoms of the benzimidazolyl groups.

XPS and Chiroptical Studies on Lanthanide(III) Complexes of Hydroxylamine and Sodium D-Camphor-β-sulfonate
Six new chiral complexes LnL3 (Ln = La(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III), Eu(III) and Gd(III)) with an optically active Schiff base ligand (HL) derived from sodium D-camphor-β-sulfonate and hydroxylamine were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance, IR, XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), electronic spectra, 1H NMR, magnetic susceptibility measurements and thermal methods. It was found that the complexes behave as non-electrolytes in CH3OH and in DMSO and possess the stoichiometric ratio of Ln:C:N:O:S = 0.33:10.1:1.0:4.0:1.0 which is consistent with the analytical data. Their dominant conformers were determined by CD spectra. A six-coordinated model is proposed for these complexes.

Preparation, crystal structure, and magnetism of [(CH3)2NH2][PrCl4(H 2O)2]
The complex water containing chloride [(CH3)2NH2][PrCl4(H 2O)2] has been prepared for the first time and the crystal structure has been determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The compound crystallizes orthorhombically in the space group Cmca (Z = 8) with a = 1796.6(2) pm, b = 940.7(1) pm, and c = 1238.4(2) pm. The anionic part of the structure is built up by chains of edge-connected trigondodecahedra [PrCl6(H2O)2]3- according to [PrCl4/2Cl2(H2O)2]-, which are held together by dimethylammonium cations ([(CH3)2NH2]+). In order to study the interactions between the praseodymium cation (Pr3+) and the ligands magnetic measurements were carried out. The magnetic data were interpreted by ligand field calculations applying the angular overlap model.

Lanthanide(III) complexes of N-arylthioureas
Lanthanide(III) complexes of the general formula, [LnX3-m(Ptu)n]Xm.2H2O and [LnX3-m(o/m/p-Totu)n]Xm.2H2O [where, Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, Y; X = NO3, Cl; Ptu = N-phenylthiourea, Totu = tolylthiourea; m = 0, 1 and n = 3, 4] have been isolated and characterized. Solution enthalpies of hydrates LnCl3·xH2O (Ln=Ce-Lu)
Trichlorides of the lanthanide elements Ln=Ce-Lu form: (a) isotypic hexahydrates LnCl3·6H2O with a coordination number (CN) 8 for the Ln3+ ions. (b) Two isotypic groups of trihydrates LnCl3·3H2O, in the first group Ln=Ce-Dy the CN is 8; the structure of the second group Ln=Er-Lu is unknown. With Ho no trihydrate exists; a dihydrate is formed. (c) Two isotypic groups of monohydrates LnCl3·H2O with unknown structure - Ln=Ce-Dy and Ln=Ho-Lu. For all compounds and for anhydrous chlorides LnCl3 solution enthalpies were measured with an isoperibolic calorimeter. The ΔsolH0 values do not depend only on the difference (lattice enthalpies/hydration enthalpies), but also on the state in solution. According to Spedding the CN of the Ln3+ ions against water changes from 9 to 8 between Nd and Sm, causing minima in the series of solution enthalpies. Dihydrates LnCl3·2H2O are found for Ln=Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and presumably for Eu and Gd. They are not yet well characterised.

The dehydration schemes of rare-earth chlorides
The dehydration schemes of LaCl3·7H2O, CeCl3·7H2O, PrCl3·7H2O, PrCl3·7H2O, EuCl3·6H2O, GdCl3·OH2O, HoCl3·6H2O, ErCl3·OH2O, TmCl3·6H2O, YbCl3·OH2O and YCl3·6H2O have been investigated by the isothermal fluidizedbed technique. This technique is based on the fact that reactions proceed at a close approach to equilibrium and thus give rise to constant reaction rate regimes at constant gas flow and temperature in the bed. By injecting a small portion of HCl(g) (～1%) into the gas stream, hydrolysis is avoided, and dehydration to the monohydrate is recorded by both thermal analysis of the preheated inlet gas and chemical analysis of samples taken from the bed. Based on the present results, together with previous results on NdCl3·OH2O, TbCl3·6H2O and DyCl3·6H2O, dehydration schemes of all rare-earth chlorides except LuCl3 and ScCl3 are suggested.

Orthorhombic low-temperature modifications of compounds Cs3LnCl6 (Ln = Nd-Yb)-preparation and thermodynamic stability
The compounds Cs3LnCl6 (Ln=Nd-Yb) can be obtained from aqueous solutions with an orthorhombic structure /S.G. Pbcm/, whereas from solutions in anhydrous acetic acid a modification with the monoclinic Cs3BiCl6 structure /S.G. C 2/c/ is formed. By solution calorimetry, the orthorhombic phase could be proved to be the low temperature modification. Molar volumes determined from X-ray powder patterns increase from Pbcm to C 2/c. The transition from the orthorhombic into the monoclinic phase is irreversible for kinetical reasons.

Rb3LnCl6*2H2O (Ln=La-Nd): Preparation, Crystal Structure, and Thermal Behaviour
The compounds Rb3LnCl6*2H2O (Ln=La-Nd) were prepared from acetic acid aspowders. The prepartion from aqueous solutions does not yield the pure products because RbCl precipitates as first compound. The structure of R b3LaCl6*2H2O was determined by X-ray analysis of a single crystal obtained from aqueous solution. The compounds with Ln=La-Nd are isotypic. Theycrystallize hexagonally in the space group P63/M (Rb3LaCl6*2H2O: a=1220 .4(2) pm, c=1688.6(3) pm) with Z=6. Anionic trimeric units [Ln3Cl12(H2O)6](3-) are stacked along the c-axis over the corners of the unit cell. In the stacking frequency the units are rotated by 60° with respect to each other around the c-axis. The coordination number (C.N.) of Ln(3+) is 8, which is satisfied by four bridging and two terminal chloride ions and two water molecules. The coordination spheres of the three rubidium ions in the different atomic positions are composed differently, their C.N. are 9, 8(+1) and 6(+6). The thermal dehydration of the compounds occurs in one step. The hydrates decompose at ca. 100°C to formthe anhydrous compounds Rb2LnCl5 und RbCl since the anhydrous chlorides Rb3LnCl6 are thermodynamically stable above ca. 400°C only.

Reactions of Carbonyl Compounds with Grignard Reagents in the Presence of Cerium Chloride
The addition of Grignard reagents to ketones is significantly enhanced by cerium chloride with remarkable supression of side reactions, particularly enolization.Some esters, which are prone to side reactions, also react readily with Grignard reagents in the presence of cerium chloride to give normal reaction products in reasonable to high yields.
