- Method for preparing 5-(2-hydroxyethyl) amino-o-methylphenol

The invention relates to a method for preparing 5-(2-hydroxyethyl) amino-o-methylphenol, and the method is characterized by comprising the following steps: (1) condensation reaction, to be more specific, condensation reaction of 5-amino-2-methyl phenol and epoxy ethane in the presence of a catalyst in a certain solvent; (2) distillation, to be more specific, reaction liquid vacuum distillation for removal of a solvent to obtain a 5-(2-hydroxyethyl) amino-o-methylphenol crude product; and (3) purification, to be more specific, organic solvent recrystallization of the 5-(2-hydroxyethyl) amino-o-methylphenol crude product to obtain a purified 5-(2-hydroxyethyl) amino-o-methylphenol product. The method has the advantages of improving of product quality and grade, reducing of environmental pollution, reducing of cost, simple operation, clean and environmentally-friendly product production and makes the product more suitable for mass production.

5-Substituted ortho-aminophenols of formula: STR1 in which: R1 denotes a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a hydroxyalkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R2 denotes, independently of R1, an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an alkoxy radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a benzyl radical; the addition salts with an acid and the phenates, and dyeing composition containing a compound of formula (I) or a salt or a phenate of such a compound. The 5-substituted ortho-aminophenols enable hair to be dyed in a rich spectrum of hues having good durability.
