- Multifunctional oxygen vacancies in WO3–x for catalytic alkylation of C–H by alcohols under red-light

Surface reaction kinetics and light absorption properties of a photocatalyst are essential demands for efficiently solar to chemical energy converting. In this study, plasmonic WO3–x was firstly applied to photocatalytic alkylation of arenes under red light irradiation. The oxygen vacancies, both on the surface and in the bulk of WO3–x, allow abundant free electrons to increase carrier densities and support its LSPR using low energy photons. The surface oxygen vacancies have more functions: they not only release surface tungsten sites which ensure the chemisorption of alcohols due to the coordianation ability but also promote the activation of alcohols via an efficient transport of the holes on the neighbouring O sites to chemisorption alcohol species. In brief, the bulk oxygen vacancies provide abundant charges and the surface vacancies promote the bond adsorption and activation abilities, which ensure the high efficiency of photocatalytic alkylation of C–H.

- Method for reducing carbonyl reduction to methylene under illumination

The invention belongs to the technical field of organic chemical synthesis. The method comprises the following steps: (1) mixing the carbonyl compound and the amine compound in a solvent, reacting 3 - 6 under the illumination of 380 - 456 nm, the reaction system is low in toxicity, high in atom utilization rate 12 - 24h. and production efficiency, safe and controllable in reaction process and capable of simplifying the operation in the preparation and production process. At the same time, the residue toxicity of the reaction is minimized, the pollution caused by the production process to the environment is reduced, and the steps and operations of removing residues after the reaction are simplified. In addition, the reactant feedstock is readily available. The reactant does not need additional modification before the reaction, can be directly used for preparing production, simplifies the operation steps, and shortens the reaction route. The production cost is obviously reduced.

- Mixed Alkyl/Aryl Diphos Ligands for Iron-Catalyzed Negishi and Kumada Cross Coupling Towards the Synthesis of Diarylmethane

Mixed alkyl/aryl diphos ligands have been prepared and their application in iron-catalyzed cross coupling of benzylic chlorides with diaryl zinc (Negishi) or aryl Grignard reagents (Kumada) towards the synthesis of diarylmethane has been evaluated. The iron?diphos catalytic system exhibited the enhanced activity and selectivity in the two coupling reactions. The electron-rich mixed PPh2/PCy2 ligands outperformed their symmetrical PPh2 congeners, and led to decreased homocoupling byproduct formation. It indicates that the electronic effect of the ligands plays an important role in the catalytic performance. The Fe catalyst supported by L8 bearing an electron-rich PCy2 substituent and a sterically demanding tert-butyl on ethene backbone exhibited the best catalytic performance and good functional group tolerance in the two cross coupling reactions.

- Borane-catalyzed C(sp3)-F bond arylation and esterification enabled by transborylation
-
The activation and functionalization of carbon- fluorine bonds represent a significant synthetic challenge, given the high thermodynamic barrier to C-F bond cleavage. Stoichiometric hydridoborane-mediated C-F functionalization has recently emerged, but is yet to be rendered catalytic. Herein, the borane-catalyzed coupling of alkyl fluorides with arenes (carbon-carbon bond formation) and carboxylic acids (carbon-oxygen bond formation) has been developed using transborylation reactions to achieve catalytic turnover. Successful C-C and C-O coupling across a variety of structurally and electronically differentiated arenes and carboxylic acids was achieved using 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (H-B-9-BBN) as the catalyst and pinacolborane (HBpin), with broad functional group tolerance. Experimental and computational studies suggest a mechanistic dichotomy for the carbon-carbon and carbon-oxygen coupling reactions. B-F transborylation (B-F/B-H metathesis) between F-B-9-BBN and HBpin enabled catalytic turnover for carbon-carbon bond formation, whereas direct exchange between the alkyl fluoride and acyloxyboronic ester (C-F/B-O metathesis) was proposed for carbon-oxygen coupling, where H-B-9-BBN catalyzed the dehydrocoupling of the carboxylic acid with HBpin.

The strong boron Lewis acid tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane B(C6F5)3 is known to catalyze the dehydrogenative coupling of certain amines and hydrosilanes at elevated temperatures. At higher temperature, the dehydrogenation pathway competes with cleavage of the C?N bond and defunctionalization is obtained. This can be turned into a useful methodology for the transition-metal-free reductive deamination of a broad range of amines as well as heterocumulenes such as an isocyanate and an isothiocyanate.

Molecular compounds featuring nitrogen atoms are typically regarded as Lewis bases and are extensively employed as donor ligands in coordination chemistry or as nucleophiles in organic chemistry. By contrast, electrophilic nitrogen-containing compounds are much rarer. Nitrenium cations are a new family of nitrogen-based Lewis acids, the reactivity of which remains largely unexplored. In this work, nitrenium ions are explored as catalysts in five organic transformations. These reactions are the first examples of Lewis acid catalysis employing nitrogen as the site of substrate activation. Moreover, these compounds are readily accessed from commercially available reagents and exhibit remarkable stability toward moisture, allowing for benchtop transformations without the need to pretreat solvents.

- Alumina grafted SBA-15 sustainable bifunctional catalysts for direct cross-coupling of benzylic alcohols to diarylmethanes

AlSBA-15 catalysts possessing Br?nsted acid and Lewis acid-base bifunctionalities catalyze the direct arylation of benzyl alcohols to diarylmethanes with an 85% product yield through C-O bond activation. 2 and 4wt%AlSBA-15 catalysts have been synthesised by adopting a simple and efficient post-synthetic metal implantation route. The synthesised catalysts were characterized using XRD, N2 adsorption and desorption, 27Al MAS NMR, XPS, HR-TEM, NH3 and CO2-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and pyridine-transmission-FTIR spectroscopy techniques to confirm the existence of Br?nsted acid and Lewis acid-base bifunctionalities. Through various control experiments, it is verified that Br?nsted acid sites activate the benzyl alcohol and Lewis base sites interact with phenylboronic acid concurrently to accomplish the coupling reaction. In the recyclability study, 4wt%AlSBA-15 preserves its activity and stability up to 5 cycles. The 4wt%AlSBA-15 catalyst unlike homogeneous catalysts does not require additives, long reaction time and expensive metals.

A family of N-heterocyclic carbene–palladium(II)–N,N-dimethylbenzylamine complexes ((NHC)LPdCl2; L?=?N,N-dimethylbenzylamine) were synthesized as well as characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic data. These complexes exhibited higher catalytic activities for the Suzuki reaction of benzyl chlorides to afford diarylmethanes under milder conditions than other efficient (NHC)LPdCl2 complexes. Using the optimum conditions, the expected coupling products were obtained in moderate to high yields. All reactions were carried out in air and all starting materials were used as supplied without purification.

- Scalable Wolff-Kishner Reductions in Extreme Process Windows Using a Silicon Carbide Flow Reactor
-
A safe and scalable continuous flow strategy for Wolff-Kishner reductions that employs methanol as the solvent has been developed. The use of low-cost hydrazine as the reducing agent in combination with a caustic base provides an atom-efficient, environmentally friendly method for the deoxygenation of aldehydes and ketones to alkanes. Because of the required harsh and corrosive reaction conditions (200 °C, 50 bar), reactor materials such as stainless steel, glass, or any type of polymer have compatibility problems, rendering this process problematic on a production scale. The use of corrosion-resistant silicon carbide (SiC) as the reactor material opens up the possibility of performing Wolff-Kishner reductions on scale with a considerably improved safety profile. Methanol as the solvent significantly simplifies the workup procedure compared with the generally employed high-boiling solvents such as diethylene glycol. The continuous flow protocol was applied to a number of substrates and provided the desired products in good to high yields with space-time yields of up to 152 g L-1 h-1. In addition, a pharmaceutically valuable active pharmaceutical ingredient precursor was synthesized by employing this higherature/pressure Wolff-Kishner protocol.

The treatment of a benzyl alcohol and aryl halide with a nickel catalyst and low-valent titanium reagent generated from TiCl4(lutidine) (lutidine = 2,6-lutidine) and manganese powder afforded the cross-coupled product in high yield. A mechanistic study indicated the intermediacy of the benzyl radicals that originate from the benzyl alcohols.

An iron-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction between alkyl halides and arylboronic esters was developed that does not involve activation of the boronic ester with alkyllithium reagents nor requires magnesium additives. A combination of experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that lithium amide bases coupled with iron complexes containing deprotonated cyanobis(oxazoline) ligands were best to obtain high yields (up to 89%) in catalytic cross-coupling reactions. Mechanistic investigations implicate carbon-centered radical intermediates and highlight the critical importance of avoiding conditions that lead to iron aggregates. The new iron-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura reaction was applied toward the shortest reported synthesis of the pharmaceutical Cinacalcet.

A nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling to construct the C(sp2)-C(sp3) bond was developed from two sustainable biomass-based feedstocks: phenol derivatives with umpolung aldehydes. This strategy features the in situ generation of moisture/air-stable hydrazones from naturally abundant aldehydes, which act as alkyl nucleophiles under catalysis to couple with readily available phenol derivatives. The avoidance of using both halides as the electrophiles and organometallic or organoboron reagents (also derived from halides) as the nucleophiles makes this method more sustainable. Water tolerance, great functional group (ketone, ester, free amine, amide, etc.) compatibility, and late-stage elaboration of complex biological molecules exemplified its practicability and unique chemoselectivity over organometallic reagents.

Herein, we give a full account of the development of the palladium-catalysed cross-coupling of benzylammonium salts with boronic acids. A range of benzylamine-derived quaternary ammonium salts can be coupled with boronic acids under relatively mild conditions. Our optimization has identified ligands that can be used to chemoselectively cross-couple at the ammonium in the presence of chlorides. We demonstrate that intramolecular palladium-catalysed C-H activation is also a viable pathway for the putative benzyl-Pd(II) intermediate obtained upon oxidative addition and have optimised this to obtain fluorene in good yield.

- Unmodified Fe3O4 nanostructure promoted with external magnetic field: safe, magnetically recoverable, and efficient nanocatalyst for N- and C-alkylation reactions in green conditions

Transition metal compounds have emerged as suitable catalysts for organic reactions. Magnetic compounds as soft Lewis acids can be used as catalysts for organic reactions. In this report, the Fe3O4 nanostructures were obtained from Fe2+ and Fe3+-salts, under an external magnetic field (EMF) without any protective agent. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy tools were used to characterize these magnetic compounds. The two-dimensional (2-D, it showed nanometric size in the two dimensions, nanorod structure) Fe3O4 compound showed high catalytic activity and stability in N- and C-alkylation reactions. A diverse range of N- and C-alkylation products were obtained in moderate to high yield under green and mild conditions in air. Also the N- and C-alkylation products can be obtained with different selectivity and yield by exposure reactions with EMF. Results of alkylation reactions showed that the presence of Fe(II) and Fe(III) species on the surface of magnetic catalysts (phase structure of magnetic compounds) are essential as very cheap active sites. Also, morphology of magnetic catalysts had influence on their catalytic performances. After the reaction, the catalyst/product(s) separation could be easily achieved with an external magnet and more than 95% of catalyst could be recovered. The catalyst was reused at least four times without any loss of its high catalytic activity for N- and C-alkylation reactions.

A novel Br?nsted-Lewis acidic catalyst, Hf0.5[TEAPS]PW12O40, has been prepared by the replacement of protons in neat phosphotungstic acid with both organic and metal cations and characterized by FT-IR, Py-IR, XRD, TG-DTG, ICP-AES, BET, elemental analysis and n-butylamine potentiometeric titration techniques. This hybrid heterogeneous catalyst with both Br?nsted and Lewis acidity can efficiently promote the conversion of dibenzyl ether, the self-condensation product of benzyl alcohol, to the benzylation products, as well restrain the polybenzylation of aromatics. As a result, it exhibits excellent catalytic activity and selectivity in the benzylation of p-xylene with clean benzylation reagent benzyl alcohol. Thus, an environmentally friendly route for the benzylation reaction of p-xylene with high atomic economy has been developed by this reusable Hf0.5[TEAPS]PW12O40 catalyst.

- Radical-Based C?C Bond-Forming Processes Enabled by the Photoexcitation of 4-Alkyl-1,4-dihydropyridines

We report herein that 4-alkyl-1,4-dihydropyridines (alkyl-DHPs) can directly reach an electronically excited state upon light absorption and trigger the generation of C(sp3)-centered radicals without the need for an external photocatalyst. Selective excitation with a violet-light-emitting diode turns alkyl-DHPs into strong reducing agents that can activate reagents through single-electron transfer manifolds while undergoing homolytic cleavage to generate radicals. We used this photochemical dual-reactivity profile to trigger radical-based carbon–carbon bond-forming processes, including nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions.

- Synthesis of zwitterionic palladium complexes and their application as catalysts in cross-coupling reactions of aryl, heteroaryl and benzyl bromides with organoboron reagents in neat water

N-(3-Chloro-2-quinoxalinyl)-N′-arylimidazolium salts (aryl = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl [HL1Cl]Cl, aryl = mesityl [HL2Cl]Cl) have been synthesized by treating 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline with the corresponding N′-arylimidazole in neat water. Facile reactions of these imidazolium salts with Pd(PPh3)4 and Pd2(dba)3/PPh3 (dba = dibenzyledene acetone) at 50 °C have afforded zwitterionic palladium(ii) complexes [Pd(HL1)(PPh3)Cl2] (I) and [Pd(HL2)(PPh3)Cl2] (II) in excellent yields. I and II have been tested for their ability to catalyze Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling (SMC) reactions in neat water/K2CO3 and are found to be highly active for carrying out these reactions between aryl bromides and organoboron reagents. Furthermore, the scope of the catalyst I was also examined by employing (hetero)aryl bromides, hydrophilic aryl bromides, benzyl bromides and various organoboron reagents. More than 80 aryl/benzyl bromide-arylboronic acid combinations were screened in neat water/K2CO3 and it was found that I was a versatile catalyst, which produced biaryls/diarylmethanes in excellent yields. A TON of 82 000 was achieved by using I. Studies on the mechanism have also been carried out to investigate the involvement of carbene complexes in the catalytic path. Poison tests and a two-phase test were also conducted and the results are reported.

We report herein a transition-metal-free coupling reaction of arylboronic acids with benzyl halides and mesylates for the construction of C(sp2)[sbnd]C(sp3) bonds. A unique feature of this coupling reaction is the formation regioisomers in some cases. Mechanistic studies suggest that this reaction may proceed via an unprecedented Friedel–Crafts-type reaction pathway under base conditions with the assistance of boronic acid moiety.

The nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl halides with alkyl radicals derived from alkyl halides has recently been extended to couplings with carbon radicals generated by a co-catalyst. In this study, a new co-catalyst, cobalt phthalocyanine (Co(Pc)), is introduced and demonstrated to be effective for coupling substrates not prone to homolysis. This is because Co(Pc) reacts with electrophiles by an SN2 mechanism instead of by the electron-transfer or halogen abstraction mechanisms previously explored. Studies demonstrating the orthogonal reactivity of (bpy)Ni and Co(Pc), applying this selectivity to the coupling of benzyl mesylates with aryl halides, and the adaptation of these conditions to the less reactive benzyl phosphate ester and an enantioconvergent reaction are presented.

A photooxygenation of benzylic sp3 C-H reaction has been demonstrated using O2 mediated by visible light. This protocol provides a simple and mild route to obtain ketones from benzylic sp3 C-H bonds. Various benzylic sp3 C-H bonds can be transformed into the desired ketone derivatives in moderate to good yields. The 18O2 labelling experiments demonstrated that the oxygen introduced into ketone originated from dioxygen. A plausible mechanism has been proposed accordingly.

A novel ether/BF3 reductive system has been described, in which diphenylmethanols and their ether and ester derivatives are used as starting materials. Reductions are performed in ether under reflux and an argon atmosphere, and the addition of extra water is beneficial to this reduction. A series of alkanes are able to be prepared with good to excellent yields. A deuterated experiment exhibits that the reductive hydrogen is generated from ether. The mechanism is discussed in detail to explain the observed reactivity.

- Ultrasound assisted enzyme catalyzed degradation of Cetirizine dihydrochloride

Cetirizine dihydrochloride, a pharmaceutical drug of the class antihistamines is frequently detected in wastewater samples. In the present work, the degradation of Cetirizine dihydrochloride is carried out using a novel technique of laccase enzyme as a catalyst under the influence of ultrasound irradiation. Effect of various process parameters such as enzyme loading, temperature, power, duty cycle, frequency and speed of agitation has been studied along with identification of the degradation intermediates. The maximum degradation of 91% is achieved at optimized experimental parameters such as 0.02% enzyme loading (w/v), 50°C temperature, power input of 100 W, 25 kHz frequency and 50% duty cycle with agitation speed of 200 rpm. It is observed that enzymatic degradation of Cetirizine dihydrochloride under the influence of ultrasound irradiation not only enhances the degradation but also reduces the time of degradation as compared to conventional enzymatic degradation technique.

- Direct C(sp2)-C(sp3) cross-coupling of diaryl zinc reagents with benzylic, primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl halides

The direct C(sp2)-C(sp3) cross-coupling of diaryl zinc reagents with benzylic, primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl halides proceeded in the absence of coordinating ethereal solvents at ambient temperature without the addition of a catalyst. The C(sp2)-C(sp3) cross-coupling showed excellent functional-group tolerance, and products were isolated in high yields, generally without the requirement for purification by chromatography. This process represents an expedient, operationally simple method for the construction of new C(sp2)-C(sp3) bonds. Zinc and you'll miss it. Direct C(sp2)-C(sp3) cross-coupling of diaryl zinc reagents with alkyl halides proceeded rapidly at ambient temperature without a coordinating ethereal solvent or an added catalyst (see scheme). This versatile, operationally simple approach to C(sp2)-C(sp3) bond formation enables the expedient construction of a diverse array of carbon-based structural motifs.

The use of highly active zinc, prepared by the Rieke method, for the direct preparation of benzylic zinc mesylate was investigated. The oxidative addition of highly active zinc to benzyl mesylate was easily completed under mild conditions. The resulting benzylic zinc mesylates were employed in subsequent cross-coupling reactions with a broad range of electrophiles, and the formation of the corresponding products was successful.

1-Acetyl-[1a,3,5-CF3,1-C(=O)CH3] and 1-benzoyl-5-hydroxypyrazolines [1b, 3,5-CF3, 1-C(=O)C 6H5] have been synthesized and reacted with Ni(OAc) 2·4H2O in the presence of PPh3 to form square planar nickel complexes, which revealed a O,N,O′-coordination. An additional coordination site on the nickel center is occupied by one triphenylphosphane ligand. After having investigated the properties of the complexes, catalytic experiments have been carried out to synthesize diarylmethanes. Applying the complexes in the nickel-catalyzed carbon-carbon cross coupling of aryl halides with benzylzinc bromide excellent yields and selectivities of the corresponding diarylmethane have been obtained. Moreover, various experiments have been performed to shed light on the underlying reaction mechanism.

A simple and efficient iron-catalyzed method for arylation of aromatic carbonyl compounds is reported. The use of 4-% FeCl3 or Fe(acac) 3 as the catalyst, in combination with a slight excess of chlorotrimethylsilane and triethylsilane, chlorination of benzylic ketones and aldehydes with subsequent Friedel-Crafts alkylation of arenes is achieved. Although the method is limited by the general constraints associated with Friedel-Crafts alkylation reactions, robust applications for the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates and so on can be envisioned. We present the syntheses of 12 cyclometalated palladium C-N 2-phenylimidazole carbene complexes with different N-1 groups as well as different substituents at the C-2 phenyl group of the cyclometalating imidazole. We investigated the influence of these substituents by comparing the catalytic performance of the complexes in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of aryl chlorides. We can show a strong dependence between the steric demand of the N-1 substituent of the cyclometalating imidazole and the catalytic activity in the cross-coupling reaction. The most active complex shows a wide substrate scope, where several aryl as well as benzyl chlorides could be coupled with different boronic acids in excellent yields using very low catalyst concentrations of 0.05 mol %.

- Indium(III) triflate - A catalyst for greener aromatic alkylation reactions

An environmentally friendly method for alkylating aromatic compounds with simple alcohols in the presence of a catalytic amount of indium(III) triflate is reported. Ionic liquids are used as solvents and energy-efficient heating is provided by microwave radiation. Good yields are obtained with benzyl, secondary, and tertiary alcohols. Simple primary alcohols are not effective alkylating agents under these conditions. With tertiary alcohols, activated aromatic compounds such as toluene and anisole must be used to obtain good yields. The catalyst, which is immobilized in a water-insoluble ionic liquid, can be easily recycled without significant loss of activity.

- Palladium-catalyzed substitution and cross-coupling of benzylic fluorides

Benzylic fluorides are suitable substrates for Pd(0)-catalyzed Tsuji-Trost substitution using carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur nucleophiles and for cross-coupling with phenylboronic acid. For the bifunctional substrate 4-chlorobenzyl fluoride, fine-tuning of the reaction conditions allows for the regioselective displacement of either the chlorine or fluorine substituent. The leaving group ability of fluoride vs other groups displaced in substitution is CF3CO2 ≈ p-NO2C6H 4CO2 ≈ OCO2CH3 > F > CH3CO2, a ranking similar to allylic fluorides under Pd catalysis.
