The scale of temperature in which 212 degrees is the boiling point of water at 760 mm Hg and 32 degrees is the freezing point of water. The scale was invented by a German physicist, G. D. Fahrenheit (1686–1736), who introduced the use of mercury instead of alcohol in thermometers. The entry for centigrade contains a method of converting from Fahrenheit to centigrade.
