    The reaction between certain alcohols and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde in dilute sulfuric acid solutions to give soluble colored complexes. 1,2-Propylene glycol gives a colored product while ethylene glycol does not. The reaction has also been employed to determine cyclohexanol in cyclohexanone.
