Hyoscyamine sulfate(620-61-1) is a secondary metabolite found in certain plants of the Solanaceae family, including henbane (Hyoscyamus niger), mandrake (Mandragora officinarum), jimsonweed (Datura stramonium), and deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna).

Hyoscyamine sulphate Uses

Hyoscyamine sulfate(620-61-1) is used to provide symptomatic relief to various gastrointestinal disorders including spasms, peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis, colic and cystitis. It has also been used to relieve some heart problems, control some of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, as well as for control of respiratory secretions in palliative care. It is also useful in pain control where the neuropathic pain in being treated with opioids as it increases the level of analgesia obtained. Several mechanisms are thought to contribute to this effect. The closely related drugs atropine, scopolamine. and the other members of the anticholinergic drug group like cyclobenzaprine, trihexyphenidyl, and orphenadrine along with unrelated drugs with similar results like gabapentin are also used for this purpose. Some patients report that codeine, dihydrocodeine, nicocodeine, hydrocodone, thebacon, oxycodone and similar drugs taken by mouth on an empty stomach can sllow hyoscyamine sulfate(620-61-1) to produce a mild to moderate "rush" if taken sublingually between 15 and 75 minutes after the analgesic is taken -- this is thought to be a combination of the opioid potentiation and general vasodialation effects of the hyoscyamine sulfate(620-61-1). The use of carbonated beverages to wash the analgesic down and afterwards are also useful in producing this effect, which has legitimate clinical usefulness in breaking the momentum of a developing breakthrough pain incident and pain which is concurrent with depression or emotional distress. Stronger opioids like morphine and hydromorphone may be more likely to rapidly produce sleep if taken as such with or simultaneously with hyoscyamine sulfate(620-61-1). Measures to prevent constipation are especially important when hyoscyamine sulfate(620-61-1) is used along with opioids and other anti-peristaltic agents as a low to moderate risk of paralytic ileus may exist.
