  • Description Calcium telluride has the molecular formula of CaTe and the molecular weight of 167.6782 g/mol. It can be prepared by heating the elements together in an inert atmosphere: Ca+ Te+ heat ? CaTe Te melts at 450°C and Ca melts at 842°C. A heating temperature of 750°C is sufficient to cause complete reaction. CaTe powder can also be prepared by reaction of stoichiometric quantities of Ca and Te in a pure graphite crucible in vacuumat 480°C for 48 h. Its molecular weight is 119.04 g/mol. Calcium telluride has the CAS number of 12013-57-9. It is a crystalline solid with a density of 4.872 g/cm3. It has the rock salt structure with octahedral coordination of the Ca2+ cation. Its refractive index is 2.51. If heated to 1605°C, it decomposes.
  • Uses CaTe has found very little usage in industry and the only available information academically deals with its usage to form ternary tellurides. It is available commercially in limited quantities.
