Thus, pentanal [110-62-3] and 2-methylbutanal [96-17-3] were aldol condensed in 3.1 ratio to give 2-propylheptanal [76058-49-6] and 4-methyl-2-propyl-2-hexenal [77731-56-7] in 9:1 ratio. 90684-11-0 is the cas registry number. This chemical is also mentioned in this article. This mixt. was hydrogenated to give a mixt. contg. 2-methylbutanol [137-32-6] 66.4, 2-propyl-1-heptanol (I) [10042-59-8] 4.1, and 1-pentanol [71-41-0] 27.5%. An addnl. fraction was obtained contg. 87.7% I and 11.3% 2-propyl-4-methyl-1-hexanol [66256-62-0]. I was used to prep. bis(2-propylheptyl) phthalate [53306-54-0] which, when evaluated at 40% in PVC [9002-86-2] had low temp. flexibility comparable to DOP and improved volatility. .

Hydrogenation over Co/kieselguhr (125-160°/10.3 MPa) gave C10 alcs. with high content of 2-propyl-1-heptanol [10042-59-8], which was distd. and esterified to give bis(2-propylheptyl) phthalate [53306-54-0] plasticizer for PVC [9002-86-2]. .
