DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) Poly(.gamma.-benzyl L-glutamate) (I) [25014-27-1] was debenzylated in benzene with anhyd. HBr, and the results were compared with those of the debenzylation of benzyl butyrate (II) [103-37-7] as a model compd. The debenzylation reaction const. of I assuming 2nd-order reaction kinetics was a function of the degree of debenzylation, and by extrapolation the initial rate const. was obtained. The debenzylation of II obeyed 2nd-order reaction kinetics. The initial rate const. for I was much smaller than for II, and the entropy of activation was much greater. The rate of debenzylation of I accelerated with increasing debenzylation because of the steric effect of the nearest-neighboring side chains distributed in the .alpha.-helical backbone chain.
