DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 51 (Fossil Fuels, Derivatives, and Related Products) The addn. of 0.005% 2-hydroxyethyl stearate [111-60-4], diethylene glycol monostearate [106-11-6], or glycerol monostearate [31566-31-1] to jet aircraft fuel decreases its abrasive effect on metals in lab. testing (KIIGA 2 procedure). Stearates contg. 31 free OH groups are more effective antiwear agents in jet aircraft fuel than stearates without OH groups. This is related to the greater polarity and stronger adsorption on metals of the OH-contg. monostearates vs. di- or tristearates.

This effect was attributed to formation of H-bonds between I or b-naphthol and the glycol emulsifiers on the basis of dialysis expts. and IR spectra.
