II and the intermediate I (R = SMe, X = TsO) [64873-77-4] were converted by std. methods into 5 bis dyes. The spectra of I [R = (1-methyl-4-quinolinylidene)methyl, X = TsO](III) [64873-79-6] and IV [64873-81-0], having the same chromophores but linked differently, were compared; IV showed a stronger interaction between chromophores than III, which was attributed to the inability of III to exist in the gauche conformation in soln. owing to steric hindrance.Except for chemicals metioned above, 64873-75-2 is also used. ..

Tendencies to adsorb metal sulfide particles decrease with decreasing order of magnitude of the neg. formal charges on (IV).
