DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Section cross-reference(s): 29 Seven ferrocene-bound polyester resins were prepd. from fumaric acid and diethylene glycol in the presence of different ferrocene derivs. To accomplish the incorporation of the organometallic moiety into the polyester resin chain, the cyclopentadienyl rings of ferrocene were substituted in the 1,1'-positions with reactive functional groups. The ferrocene derivs. used were 1,1'-bis(1-hydroxyethyl)ferrocene (I) [12289-46-2], 1,1'-ferrocenedicarboxylic acid (II) [1293-87-4], and 1,1'-ferrocenediacetic acid (III) [32681-19-9]. The incorporation of an organometallic complex significantly increased the rate of the polyesterification process. In order of increasing rate enhancement, the effect was II < III < I. The effectiveness of ferrocene derivs. chem. incorporated into the polyester backbone during copolymn. with styrene (IV) [100-42-5] was studied by monitoring the gel time, cure rate, and the resin properties. The efficiency of the copolymn. reaction of ferrocene-bound polymers with IV decreased in the order I > III > II. Mechanisms to account for these results are presented. Some of the strength-related properties were also studied.

Spectroscopic data suggest that the esters of ferrocenecarboxylic acid adopt an O-bridge dimer structure mode. The structure features four anisobidentate bridging carboxylate ligands.
