DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 56 (Nonferrous Metals and Alloys) The contact reaction of C fiber with Al and of C fibers coated with TiC, SiC, or ZrC with Al was studied by low-frequency internal friction at 20-1000.degree. and .apprx.5 .times. 10-5 torr. The Al film of .apprx.0.3 .mu. thickness was deposited on C fibers at 660.degree.. On the curve of internal friction and of shear modulus relation to temp. 2 maxs. at 100-500.degree. and 600-750.degree. were obsd. for Al-coated C fibers. The deposition of TiC on C fiber resulted in a significant suppression of the 2 maxs. At 100-500.degree. the conglomeration of the Al film and at 550-800 the formation of the Al4C3 [1299-86-1] phase occurred. The carbide barrier sublayer suppressed the conglomeration of the Al film and impeded formation of Al carbide.

The av. 4-point bending strength was 152 and 165 MN/m2 at room temp. and 1273 K, resp., Vickers hardness was 12,000 MN/m2, and the corrosion resistance of samples immersed in water was no wt. change at £30 h, 2.8 wt.% loss after 50 h, and the sample was completely broken after 100 h. .
