DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 78 (Inorganic Chemicals and Reactions) Section cross-reference(s): 75 The cryst. modifications of RbOH and RbOD were studied between 15 K and m.p. by x-ray, neutron diffraction and calorimetric methods and IR and Raman spectroscopy. The results elucidate the bonding interactions in these phases. Lattice consts. are given for various temp. The structurally distinct effect of the asym. charge distribution of the hydroxide ion decreases with increasing temps. In the TlI-type structure the anions are H-bonded forming infinite chains at low temps. The H bonds break open by warming-up. Phase transformations >300 K (RbOD) or 265 K (RbOH) are assocd. with the discontinuous expansion of rocking vibrations of the anions. In the high-temp. form with NaCl-type structure the anions rotate quasi-freely. .
