(PET) system using Time of Flight (TOF) information, named TDVI, was designed, built and installed. The system comprises essentially 3 rings of 96 CsF [13400-13-0] probes and a fourth ring of 96 BaF2 [7787-32-8] probes. Its design is aimed at whole-body quant., dynamic, 3D studies. The phys. characterization of TDVI was performed as it would be for a conventional non-TOF PET system, in terms of spatial transverse and longitudinal resoln. along the vertical axis, sensitivity, time resoln., and inter- and intralane uniformity. The specific advantages of TOF information when used in PET were studied in preliminary measurements. They consist in very fast count rate studies, elimination of random events, and improvement of the S/N ratio resulting in a so-called effective sensitivity gain. Special attention was directed to the comparison of the CsF and BaF2 probes in terms of sensitivity gain. BaF2 crystal could be an answer to most of the shortcomings of CsF.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 68 (Phase Equilibriums, Chemical Equilibriums, and Solutions) Section cross-reference(s): 77 19F and 119Sn NMR spectroscopy was used to study the SnF2-MF-H2O (M = Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+, and [NH4]+) system. The NMR data are supplemented by frozen soln. 119Sn Moessbauer measurements. The dominant species in the SnF2-H2O system is a hydrated stannous fluoride, probably SnF2.H2O having Moessbauer parameters of d 3.46 mm s-1 and D 1.70 mm s-1. When F- is added to those solns., rapid F- exchange occurs with the hydrated SnF2 and the dominant species becomes [SnF3]-. The 119Sn Moessbauer parameters for frozen solns. of [SnF3] are d ~3.1 mm s-1, D 1.9 mm s-1. These spectroscopic data are cation dependent. No strong evidence is found for high concns. of [Sn2F5]- in any of these solns. .
