An emulsion of polydiorganosiloxane having 32 OH groups/mol., colloidal silica or alkali metal silicate, curing catalyst, emulsifier, and water is prepd. After aging for a period of time, so that an elastomeric material will be formed when H2O is removed at room temp., an amino-functional silane or its partial hydrolyzate is added to give the emulsion its improved properties. Thus, a mixt. was prepd. from an emulsion comprising Na lauryl sulfate (I) [151-21-3], H2O and OH-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) and dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, a second emulsion comprising I and H2O and dioctyltin dilaurate [3648-18-8], and a third emulsion comprising aq. silica and a small amt. of Et2NH to adjust to pH 11. The mixt. was aged at ambient temp. for 2 wk and then treated with 2-8 wt. parts amino-functional silane, e.g., g-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (II) [13822-56-5], N-b-aminoethyl-g-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (III) [1760-24-3], or N-b-aminoethyl-g-aminopropyl(methyl)dimethoxysilane (IV) [3069-29-2]. The aq. emulsions were applied to Fe test plates. II-, III-, and IV-contg. coatings had gloss 65-80, rustproofness after 3000 h no rust, and adhesion excellent (cohesive rupture of rubbery material) vs. 5-10, partial or complete rusting, and peeling at interface for similar coatings treated with glycidoxypropyl- or methacryloxypropylsilanes.

The bending strength of this molded rod was 11,700 and 9700 kg/cm2, resp., before and after a 72h-boiling-water treatment, compared with 11,400 and 8700 kg/cm2, resp., for a similar molded rod in which II was used as the coupling agent and 10,400 and 6100 kg/cm2, resp., for another similar molded rod in which I was used as the coupling agent.
