DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Section cross-reference(s): 1 Comparative studies aimed at establishing the effect of the antibiotics Avotan [37332-99-3] and Zinc bacifarmin [1405-89-6] on the absorption of 35S-labeled thiamin [59-43-8] in the jejunum of broiler chicks were carried out. In the course of 49 days, exptl. chicks received Avotan and zinc bacifarmin at 10 ppm and 36 ppm, resp., with their mixed ration. Absorption was studied in vitro with isolated 5-cm long intestine sacks after the method of T. H. Wilson and G. Wiseman. Observations were also carried out on the activity of alk. phosphatase (AlP) [9001-78-9] in the mucosa of jejunum, as well as on the content of thiamin in the liver and kidney tissue. Avotan stimulated absorption of thiamin in the small intestine and the activity of AlP in the intestinal mucosa and increased liver and kidney vitamin B1. Zinc bacifarmin inhibited absorption of this vitamin and the activity of AlP and lowered the content of vitamin B1 in the liver and kidney tissues.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) The catecholamine and corticosteroid concns. in plasma rose significantly in rats subjected to stress; at the same time the protein synthesis rate in liver microsome cell juice was reduced. Zinc bacitracin [1405-89-6] significantly increased the rate of protein synthesis in the liver microsome cell juice in unstressed rats. If rats previously given Zn bacitracin were subjected to stress, the rate of synthesis of protein was similar to the control values in undosed unstressed animals. The plasma concns. of catecholamines and corticosteroids rose in rats given Zn bacitracin to a lesser extent when the rats were stressed than in undosed rats. These findings suggest that the nutritive benefits of Zn bacitracin may be related to a stress protecting effect of the agent. .
