The decrease in effectiveness of stabilization with time, as measured by accelerated yellowing, was due to rapid formation of a photoproduct which competes as an RET quencher with the hydroxybenzophenones, but is less capable of harmlessly dissipating the energy transfered to it. Attempts to stabilize the photoproduct from the epoxy coating were unsuccessful. The antioxidants tested were: NBC [13927-77-0], Antioxidant 2246 [119-47-1], zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate [137-30-4], Cyasorb UV 1084 [14516-71-3], AM 101 [27574-34-1], and trans-.beta.-carotene [7235-40-7]; the UV light stabilizers were: triphenylamine [603-34-9], PBD [852-38-0], and 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone [131-56-6] for the epoxy coating and 2,2'-dihydroxy-4,4'-dimethoxybenzophenone [131-54-4] and 2,2',4,4'-tetrahydroxybenzophenone [131-55-5] for the urethane coatings. .
