DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) Formation of deposits on the reactor walls in polymn. of vinyl chloride is inhibited by using a water-insol. aliph. peroxydicarbonate as initiator and a combination of water-sol. borohydride or nitrite and water-insol. nigrosine [8005-03-6] as inhibitor, with late addn. of initiator to the reactor which, for optimum deposit prevention, is operated completely full and at alk. pH. Thus, successive addn. of 1930 g H2O, 0.68 g hydroxypropyl Me cellulose, 0.0056 g nigrosine, 0.045 g NaBH4, and 1112 g vinyl chloride to a stirred stainless steel reactor, heating to 56.degree., adding 0.67 g bis(4-tert-butylcyclohexyl) peroxydicarbonate [15520-11-3], and adding H2O to maintain a full reactor during polymn. gave a 75% conversion to PVC [9002-86-2] with no film or sandy deposits on the reactor walls.

The degree of conversion of the initial O to peroxide compds. was .ltoreq.30% under the exptl. conditions used. Radical decompn. reactions might produce some of the oxidn. products. At 55.degree., the av. velocity const. for decompn. of vinyl chloride polyperoxides in CH2Cl2 soln. was 8 .times. 10-5 s-1 compared with 6.6 .times. 10-5 s-1 for catalyst. The catalyst was also used in a dilatometric study of the homogeneous polymn. of styrene [100-42-5] at 60.degree. and no transfer to catalyst occurred in this system.
