Evaluation of hindered phenols for minimization of foam discoloration using the microwave scorch test
Evaluation of hindered phenols for minimization of foam discoloration using the microwave scorch test. Statton, G. L.; Gaul, J. M. (ARCO Chem. Co., Newtown Square, PA 19073, USA). J. Cell. Plast., 20(5), 346-50 (English) 1984. CODEN: JCUPAM. ISSN: 0021-955X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Hindered phenolic antioxidants [2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (I) [128-37-0], 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-sec-butylphenol (II) [17540-75-9], and butylated phenolic mixts.] and an amine antioxidant (p,p'-dioctyldiphenylamine [101-67-7]) were evaluated for scorch redn. in polyurethane foams of high-water and flame-retarded formulations using the microwave scorch test combined with the generation of response surfaces. The phenolic antioxidant showed greater activity than the amine in high-water formulations. The amine, however, was superior to the phenolic antioxidant in scorch retardation in the presence of tris(b-chloropropyl) phosphate [6145-73-9] flame retardant. Phenothiazine [92-84-2] (a peroxide decomposer) was effective for scorch redn. in both formulations. Of the phenolic antioxidants, I showed the highest activity in both formulations. The butylated phenols could be formulated in three-component systems to provide a suitable antioxidant package for retarding foam scorch.
