The method involves the fractionation of a representative diesel ext. by high performance liq. chromatog. using a semipreparative normal phase aminosilane column. The method was designed for the anal. of PAH in diesel particulate fluorene [86-73-7], anthracene [120-12-7], phenanthrene [85-01-8], fluoroanthene [206-44-0], pyrene [129-00-0], benz(a)anthracene [56-55-3], chrysene [218-01-9], and benzo(b)fluoroanthene [205-99-2], benzo(k)fluoroanthene [207-08-9], benzo(a)pyrene [50-32-8], and benzo(g,h,i)perylene [191-24-2]. Eight lab., industrial, government, and private, participated in the round robin study. Each lab. analyzed 2 diesel exts. and 2 spiked exts. The round robin anal. showed a reliable procedure for anal. of diesel emissions of 9 of the PAH in the study. The PAH method may be used for routine anal., and it is a viable procedure for verifying PAH concns. obtained using other methods and for interlab. comparisons of PAH measurements in diesel emissions.

Samples were analyzed by high pressure liq. chromatog. with fluorescence detection. PhMe [108-88-3] and CH2Cl2 [75-09-2] gave higher recoveries than MeOH [67-56-1], isoPrOH [67-63-0], acetonitrile [75-05-8], and Me2CO [67-64-1] for benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, and benzo(a)pyrene. Soxhlet extn. for 2 h ~48 cycles) with PhMe or acetonitrile was more effective than simple mech. agitation, ultrasonic agitation for 15 mins, or immersion in refluxing solvent for 2 h.
