Synthesis and dielectric properties of polystyrene-clay nanocomposite materials
Synthesis and dielectric properties of polystyrene-clay nanocomposite materials. Wang, Hong-wen; Chang, Kung-chin; Yeh, Jui-ming; Liou, Shir-joe ( Department of Chemistry and Center for Nanotechnology at CYCU, Chung-Yuan Christian University, ChungLi 320, Taiwan). Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 91(2), 1368-1373 (English) 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. CODEN: JAPNAB. ISSN: 0021-8995. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Section cross-reference(s): 76 Polystyrene-clay nanocomposite (PsCN) materials were synthesized and their properties of crystallinity, thermal behavior, and dielec. characteristics were studied. A polymerizable cationic surfactant, [2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]triphenylphosphonium bromide, was used for the intercalation of montmorillonite (MMT). The organophilic MMT was prepd. by Na+-exchanged MMT and ammonium cations of a cationic surfactant in an aq. medium. Organophilic styrene monomers were intercalated into the interlayer regions of organophilic clay hosts followed by a free-radical polymn. Exfoliation to 2% MMT in the polystyrene (PS) matrix was achieved as revealed by x-ray diffraction (x-ray diffraction) and TEM (TEM). Thermal properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric anal. (TGA) were also studied. The dielec.Several substances with their cas registry numbers 9003-53-6 and 21331-80-6 may be metioned in this study. properties of PsCNs in the form of film with clay loading from 1.0 to 5.0% were measured under frequencies of 100 Hz-1 MHz at 25-70°. A decreased dielec. const. and low dielec. loss were obsd. for PsCN materials. The dielec. response at low frequency that originated from dipole orientation was suppressed due to the intercalation of clay materials. .
