Effect of alkyl groups on the rate constants of propagation and termination in the radical polymerization of dialkyl itaconates
Effect of alkyl groups on the rate constants of propagation and termination in the radical polymerization of dialkyl itaconates. Sato, Tsuneyuki; Takahashi, Yoshiko; Seno, Makiko; Nakamura, Hiroyuki; Tanaka, Hitoshi; Ota, Tadatoshi (Fac. Eng., Tokushima Univ., Tokushima 770, Japan). Makromol. Chem., 192(12), 2909-14 (English) 1991. CODEN: MACEAK. ISSN: 0025-116X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Polymn. of dialkyl itaconates initiated by di-Me azobisisobutyrate was studied in C6H6 at 50° by ESR. The monomers used were di-Me (I), di-Et, di-Bu, and di-2-ethylhexyl (II) itaconates. All the polymn. systems involved ESR-observable propagating polymer radicals under the actual polymn. conditions. The polymn. rate (Rp) and d.p. of the resulting polymer increased with increasing alkyl chain length. The ESR-detd. rate consts. of propagation (kp) and termination (kt) decreased with increasing alkyl chain length. In this experiment, several chemicals are used like 2287-83-4 and 617-52-7 kp Of I was 3.3 times higher than that of II, while kt of I was 590 times higher than that of II. Thus, the steric effect due to the alkyl group suppressed termination much more than propagation, leading to the fact that Rp increased as the alkyl group became larger. .
