DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) Sixty fosfomycin (I) [23155-02-4]-resistant strains of gram-neg. bacilli were submitted to conjugation expts. using as recipient cell Escherichia coli K12 which is nalidixic acid resistant. After mating, the no. of I-resistant E. coli K12 colonies growing on selection plates contg. nalidixic acid and I never surpassed the normal rate of mutation for I-resistance of the recipient strain. In 65% of the expts., plasmidic resistance to other antimicrobials was transferred to E. coli K12, but was never accompanied by demonstrable I resistance. A high rate of normal mutation of recipient strain was signaled as the main problem for detecting the plasmidic nature of I resistance. Thus, the plasmidic nature of I resistance is not confirmed.
