Laterite was leached with an oxidative (NH4)2SO4 soln. About 70% Co3+ was extd. batchwise at pH 8 using I from Ni-Cu raffinate soln. contg. 2 mol sulfate. I had a soly. of 0.6-0.8 g/L in aq. raffinate following extn., and this high soly. makes it impractical for use with alk. solns. contg. low Co. The extd. Co species (mainly cobaltic hexammine) is not amenable to the electrowinning of Co due to its stability. An alternative for recovering Co from loaded solvent by H redn. is discussed.
