Brass specimens were polarized in a 0.5M NaCl and acetic acid-Na acetate buffer soln. at pH 4.43 at 60° either uninhibited or inhibited by benzotriazole [95-14-7], tolyltriazole [29385-43-1], 2,5-dimercaptothiadiazole [1072-71-5], 2-mercaptobenzothiazole [149-30-4], or phytic acid [83-86-3]. The quantity of Cu and Zn dissolved in the soln. was detd. byat. absorption spectrophotometry, and the distribution of Cu and Zn in the specimen cross section was detd. by electron probe microanal. Benzotriazole and tolyltriazole were the most effective in preventing anodic dissoln. of Cu and Zn and also controlling the growth rate of dezincification layers.
