Most anionic surfactants cause various degrees of skin tightness, the order being, triethanolamine lauryl phosphate [93464-39-2] < K myristate [13429-27-1] = triethanolamine cocoyl glutamate > Na laureth-2 sulfate [3088-31-1] < Na lauryl sulfate [151-21-3]. The ability of these surfactants to remove skin surface lipids, the ability to release amino acids and urocanic acid [104-98-3] from the horny layers, and adsorption onto the skin were examd. to det. the factors responsible for the induction of skin tightness. The degree of tightness was related to both lipid removal and the adsorption abilities of the surfactant; however, residual surfactant present after removal of skin surface lipid was primarily responsible for inducing the tightness sensation.
