DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) An ointment contains isosorbide dinitrate [87-33-2], preferably with a mean particle size of 5-40 mm, a fatty oleate ester, a nonionic sorbitan fatty acid ester, H2O, and emulsifiers and other bodying additives at 8-12, 20-30, 1-5, 40-60, and 5-7% by wt., resp. Thus, decyl oleate [3687-46-5] 72, sorbitan sesquioleate [8007-43-0] 6, and Emulgade F [8022-49-9] 18 g was melted at 80° and stirred with 176 g H2O at 70°. The emulsion was cooled to 25°, half was homogenized with 30 g of fine crystals of isosorbide dinitrate, the remaining emulsion was added, and the ointment was homogenized. No crystal growth was found during 7 mo of storage with cycling from 4° to 40° every 2 days, or during 3 freeze-thaw cycles. When applied to the skin of volunteers, the plasma drug levels were higher and the max. concn. was reached earlier than with com. prepns.
