Glucosinolates and derived products in cruciferous vegetables: total glucosinolates by retention on anion exchange resin and enzymic hydrolysis to measure released glucose
Glucosinolates and derived products in cruciferous vegetables: total glucosinolates by retention on anion exchange resin and enzymic hydrolysis to measure released glucose. VanEtten, Cecil H.; Daxenbichler, Melvin E. (North. Reg. Res. Cent., ARS, Peoria, Ill., USA). J. Assoc. Off. Anal. Chem., 60(4), 946-9 (English) 1977. CODEN: JANCA2. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Section cross-reference(s): 11 Details are given for detg. total glucosinolates in Cruciferae plants by a procedure measuring released glucose. The glucosinolates were sepd. from about 90% of other material in the plant ext. by adsorption on an anion-exchange resin. Then, by a selective thioglucosidase hydrolysis of the glucosinolates retained on the exchange resin, the glucose and aglucons were sepd. from other substances retained by the resin. Glucose was released into an aq. medium and was equiv. to the total glucosinolates. The aglucons formed by the hydrolysis was extd. into methylene chloride and detd. by gas-liq. chromatog. Based on 29 detns. of the glucose from sinigrin [3952-98-5], analyzed under different conditions, accuracy of the total glucosinolate detn. was 94.8 .+-. 7.3%. The coeff. of variation, detn. by duplicate analyses on exts. from 58 cabbage samples, was 4.6%.

Relationship between the tolerance of cabbage cultivars to the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) and the sinigrin content. Peterka, S.; Schwantes, H. O.; Schlosser, E. (Inst. Pflanzenoekol., Justus-Liebig-Univ., Giessen D-6300, Fed. Rep. Ger.). Meded. Fac. Landbouwwet., Rijksuniv. Gent, 51(3A), 891-7 (German) 1986. CODEN: MFLRA3. ISSN: 0368-9697. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Section cross-reference(s): 11 The attractiveness of 3 white cabbage cultivars to 4th instar P. xylostella larvae was assessed in relation to leaf glucosinolate compn. Sinigrin [3952-98-5], progoitrin [585-95-5], and brassicin were major glucosinolates in all the cultivars. Pronounced larval feeding activity was evident in cultivars with relatively high levels of sinigrin (3.51-4.12 mmol/g fresh wt.). Feeding activity on leaves of an unattractive cultivar (1.69 mmol sinigrin/g) was enhanced by a sinigrin spray (3 mmol/g leaf). Thus sinigrin is an attractant for the diamondback moth.
