DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) The title polymers were prepd. 4199-88-6 and 7440-50-8 which are cas registry numbers are also used here. by partial amidation of poly(acrylic acid) with 5-amino-o-phenanthroline and were complexed with Cu(II) in various concns. to give complexes with different structures. The phenanthroline (phen.) content in the polymers was £2%. Complexes of the type Cu(phen.)(COO-)1 were formed initially on adding Cu(II) to the polymer soln. Further addn. of Cu(II) after all phen. groups of the polymer were complexed led to the formation of the complexes Cu(COO-)1 and Cu(COO-)2. When the amt. of Cu(II) exceeded the sorption capacity of the polymer, Cu(H2O)62+ was formed. The addn. of free phenanthroline (I) [66-71-7] to the polymer soln. led to formation a complex coordinatively satd. with I and polymer-bound I ligands. The compn. and structure of the complexes were detd. by comparison of EPR data with that for Cu complexes with nonpolymeric ligands. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 78 (Inorganic Chemicals and Reactions) Section cross-reference(s): 73, 77 Nine new m-oxamido-bridged Cu(II)-lanthanide(III) heterobinuclear complexes, described by the overall formula Cu(dmoxpn)Ln(NO2phen)2(NO3)3 (Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er), where dmoxpn denotes N,N'-bis[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]oxamido dianions and NO2phen represents 5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline, were synthesized and characterized by the elemental analyses, molar cond. measurements and spectroscopic (IR, UV, ESR) studies. The complex Cu(dmoxpn)Gd(NO2phen)2(NO3)3 was further characterized by variable-temp. magnetic susceptibility (4.2-300 K) measurements, and the magnetic data also were used to deduce the indicated heterobinuclear structure. The results derived from least-squares fit of the exptl. data confirmed that the adjacent Cu(II) and Gd(III) ions through the oxamido-bridge in the complex are ferromagnetically coupled with the exchange integral J(Cu-Gd) = +7.8 cm-1. A plausible mechanism for the ferromagnetic coupling between Gd(III) and Cu(II) is discussed. .
