- Indian calamus root oil: attractiveness of the constituents to Oriental fruit flies, melon flies, and Mediterranean fruit flies. Jacobson, Martin; Keiser, Irving; Miyashita, Doris H.; Harris, Ernest J. (Agric. Environ. Qual. Inst., ARS, Beltsville, Md., USA). Lloydia, 39(6), 412-15 (English) 1976. CODEN: LLOYA2. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemicals) A distillate of the essential oil of the roots of Indian calamus, Acorus calamus, was highly attractive to female Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratitis capitata, female melon flies, Dacus cucurbitae, and male and female oriental fruit flies, D. dorsalis. The active components isolated from the distillate were identified as .beta.-asarone (I) [5273-86-9], acoragermacrone (II) [50281-45-3], and asarylaldehyde (III) [4460-86-0]. I was very attractive to male oriental fruit flies, II was attractive to female melon flies, and III was attractive to male and female Mediterranean fruit flies and female oriental fruit flies. Of the 3 positional isomers of III, only the 3,4,5-isomer showed activity: it was attractive to female melon flies; the 2,3,4-isomer may be repellent to all 3 speices of flies. Calamus oil of European origin was attractive to male and female oriental fruit flies.
