In naturally aerated seawater, ￡60% inhibition of Cu corrosion was achieved at inhibitor concns. of 6 ′ 10-4-8 ′ 10-3 M and increased to ￡70% with increasing immersion time. Under fully aerated conditions and inhibitor concn. of 4 ′ 10-4-10-2 M, the efficiency reached 95%. The inhibitor has synergistic properties, and the protection mechanism is purely cathodic. The max. percentage inhibition obtained for Zn was 70% for inhibitor concns. of 10-3-4 ′ 10-3 M. Corrosion acceleration was obsd. at concns. ￡8 ′ 10-4 M, and inhibition decreased with increasing immersion period. The protection mechanism for Zn is also cathodic. .
