Neutral Red [553-24-2], acrinol [1837-57-6], eosine [17372-87-1], methylene blue [61-73-4], gentian violet [548-62-9], Acridine Orange [65-61-2], proflavine [92-62-6], malachite green [569-64-2], Crystal Violet [548-62-9], safranine [477-73-6], hematoxylin [517-28-2], toluidine blue [37251-80-2], riboflavin [83-88-5], chrome alum [10141-00-1] and K2Cr2O7 were effective on enveloped viruses. Acridine Orange and toluidine blue were effective on vaccinia virus.

Brazilin, together with hematoxylin [517-28-2], a constituent of H. campechianum wood, exhibited significant antiinflammatory activities in the carrageenin-induced rat paw edema test and the fertile egg test: the order of activity was brazilin >hematoxylin, and in the former test brazilin (10 mg/kg orally) was more effective than berberine chloride at 100 mg/kg. Brazilin was approx. as active as berberine chloride in the granuloma pellet assay in rats.
