- Orange-peel flavonoids and the growth and ascorbic acid status of hypovitaminotic C guinea-pigs. Wilson, H. K.; Hassall, C.; Price-Jones, C.; Hughes, R. E. (Dep. Appl. Biol., Univ. Wales Inst. Sci. Technol., Cardiff, Wales). Proc. Nutr. Soc., 35(3), 120A-121A (English) 1976. CODEN: PNUSA4. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Hesperidin (I) [520-26-3], hesperetin [520-33-2], and flavanone [487-26-3] stimulated the growth rate of vitamin C [50-81-7]-deficient guinea pigs. In a 2nd expt., I also increased the ascorbic acid content of the adrenals, spleen, and leukocytes of vitamin C-deficient guinea pigs. The effectiveness of the 3 compds. did not rank in the same order as their antioxidant activities. An orange juice flavonoid prepn. (50 mg/kg body wt.) also stimulated the growth of vitamin C-deficient guinea pigs.

Thus, hesperetin was sulfopropylted by alk. reaction in 2-methoxyethanol with propane sultone, and the product (I) filtered and crystd. At 400 ppm, taste tests indicated that aq. solns. of I were equiv. to 85,000 ppm of sucrose. Soft drinks contg. 500 ppm of I needed no other sweetener addns. .
