Indicators for ethylene oxide. Lawton, William R. (Graphic Controls Corp., USA). U.S. US 4495291 A 22 Jan 1985, 15 pp. (English). (United States of America). CODEN: USXXAM. CLASS: ICM: G01N021-78. NCL: 436001000. APPLICATION: US 81-241226 6 Mar 1981. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 64 (Pharmaceutical Analysis) Section cross-reference(s): 80 A device is described for giving a visual indication of the amt. of residual ethylene oxide (I) [75-21-8] present in I-treated solid hospital articles and other health devices. The amt. of residual I is indicated by the difference in color exhibited by different sensitized areas of the device in the form of an opaque dark colored support member having a thin film-forming binder bonded to its surface. The film is made by laying down on the surface of the support member a soln. or dispersion of liq. crystals which exhibits a change in color when in contact with I at 60° to 100° F in a soln. of the solid binder, then evapg. the solvent. As prepd., the film is in a form adapted to be packaged with goods to be subjected to sterilization with I, a portion of the film being sealed within a transparent enclosure the walls of which possess a permeability to I no greater than that of the material of the treated goods. For example, a liq. crystal mixt. of cholesteryl nonanoate [1182-66-7], cholesteryl benzoate [604-32-0], cholesteryl oleyl carbonate [17110-51-9], and cholesteryl 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyl carbonate [15484-00-1] was prepd., mixed with a resin lacquer (binder) soln., and applied to a support. With DeSoto F 310 [88984-50-3] as binder, the presence of I changed the indicator color from ochre-brown to blue ? black.

Cholesteric liquid crystalline phase material-dye composition and venapuncture method employing the composition. Suzuki, Fred K.; Davison, Thomas W. (Liquid Crystal Products, Inc., USA). U.S. US 4015591 5 Apr 1977, 7 pp. (English). (United States of America). CODEN: USXXAM. CLASS: IC: A61B010-00. NCL: 128002000R. APPLICATION: US 76-658407 17 Feb 1976. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) Compns. having thermal color-responsive characteristics, for skin or other nondestructive temp. mapping, contain cholesterol liq. cryst. phase material (including cholesteryl, dicholesteryl, colestanyl, and sitosteryl org. esters, halides, or alkyl carbonates) and .gtoreq.2 oil-sol. dyes dissolved in this material, at a dye concn. of 0.01-1.0% of the compn., with each dye reflecting light of a different wavelength in the range 400-700 nm,. Thus, a single-phase liq. was prepd. by heating a stirred mixt. of cholesteryl nonanoate [1182-66-7] 52, cholesteryl oleyl carbonate [17110-51-9] 32, cholesteryl benzoate [604-32-0] 7, and dicholesteryl carbonate [29331-39-3] 9% at 60.degree. for 1 min. A mixt. of dyes composed of C.I. Solvent Violet 13 [81-48-1] 0.1, C.I. Solvent Yellow 33 [8003-22-3] 0.05, and C.I. Solvent Red 23 [85-86-9] 0.05 g was dissolved in the above molten liq. crystal at 60.degree.. This compn. (0.3-0.5 g) was applied onto a cleansed and cooled (25-8.degree.) skin area for vein location. The warmest temps., corresponding to vein locations, were indicated by the 1st appearance of red color, and thereafter, by the color of the shortest wavelength of the dye employed. The compn. is useful for evaluation of peripheral vascular conditions as well as inflammatory conditions of the body.
