The neat bisimide resin [91987-48-3] prepd. by curing 1-[bis(2-chloroethoxyphosphinyl)methyl]-2,4-dimaleimidobenzene [91987-37-0] exhibited a limiting O index 75% higher and a smoke evolution ~30 times lower compared with the parent polymer [37453-16-0] obtained by curing m-phenylenebismaleimide. The char yield of cured bisimide resins at 700° was 58-70% in a N atm. and 35-60% in air. An increase in formula wt. between the imide groups slightly reduced the char yield. The polymer precursors were synthesized by reacting the phosphorus-contg. diamines (1 mol) with maleic anhydride [108-31-6]/citraconic anhydride [616-02-4] (2 mol) or by reacting the monomaleimido deriv. of the P-contg. diamines with benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride [2421-28-5]/methylenebis(4-phenyl isocyanate) [101-68-8] in a 2:1 mol ratio. The monomers were characterized by elemental anal., Fourier-transform IR, proton NMR spectroscopy, and gas chromatog.-mass spectroscopy. Direct cleavage of the P-C bond and inversion of the synthesis reaction may occur during their pyrolysis. The thermal polymn. of the monomers was investigated by DSC. Biscitraconimides are thermally polymd. at a relatively lower temp. than the corresponding bismaleimides. .
