DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 10 (Microbial, Algal, and Fungal Biochemistry) Section cross-reference(s): 16 Various yeast strains were screened for prodn. of 3-hdyroxybutyric acid (3-HBA) from 1,3-butanediol (1,3-DB) by a resting cell system. Many yeasts oxidized 1,3-BD to 3-HBA. Among them, Hansenula anomala IFO 0195 produced (S)-(+)-3-HBA of the highest optical purity. Reaction temp. and addn. of glucose significantly affected the optical purity and prodn. of the acid. When resting cells of this strain were incubated at 27° in an optimal reaction mixt. contg. 107-88-0 and 6168-83-8 which are cas registry numbers of substances are two of reagents here. 60 mg/mL 1,3-BD, 2% CaCO3, and 1% glucose, 26.7 mg 3-HBA/mL with 88% enantiomeric excess was produced in 2 days. The predominant accumulation of (S)-(+)-3-HBA might be due to enantioselective degrdn. of (R)-(-)-3-HBA, though both (S)-(+)- and (R)-(-)-1,3-BD are oxidized by the strain. .
